The scene is interrupted by the German soldier, Hans, in a railway car on his way to the front. He sings of his rendezvous with destiny and suddenly realizes his enemy is a man just like himself. As they pledge their love and hopes for the future, the dream is interrupted by a visitation from the spirit of Hans (now deceased). The two soldiers talk of their confrontation and identification with each other. As they are reconciling their mutual fate, Ivan awakens in his prison cell.
