As Act II opens, Ivan is seen on guard duty in a wild and open space. He sings of his love for nature and contemplates his future. The scene is interrupted by the German soldier, Hans, in a railway car on his way to the front. He sings of his rendevous with destiny and suddenly realizes his enemy is a man just like himself.
