After a particularly difficult and brutal interrogation, Ivan becomes unconscious and dreams of reuniting with Marina. As they pledge their love and hopes for the future, the dream is interrupted by a visitation from the spirit of Hans (now deceased). The two soldiers talk of their confrontation and identification with each other. As they are reconciling their mutual fate, Ivan awakens in his prison cell.
